IST at PSU Video Interview

A production crew from University Park drove up to our humble Penn State campus in Hazleton to do a video interview with me. Why would anyone want to film an interview of me? I was among the group of students who were chosen to promote the Information Sciences and Technology major at Penn State University.

I personally would like to see more motivated and intelligent students enrolling into our IST program. In other words, we need to steal some of the enrollment from the Computer Science and Engineering departments. If those students were to understand what IST is all about before applying to the University, I would bet you any sum that they would choose this innovative and exciting major over the drab, dull lifestyle of a CS major.

I have never really thought about some of the interview questions that they asked me. For example: Define IST. Hm… That’s like a WTF question. It’s one of those things that are so obvious that it’s hard to describe.

My answer to the question was something akin to beating around the bush (our IST website does a good job at not really defining the major). IST is somewhere in between Computer Science and Business Management, where we learn about programming and algorithms but we also learn leadership and presentation skills. But to precisely define our IST major is a difficult impromptu task, especially when there’s 4 completely different options within the major itself.

Supposedly, the bits and pieces of the videos of all the chosen students will be slapped together into the ultimate IST recruiting video of all time. I’ll post a link to it when it gets published online.

By all means share them, and start the conversation.
