Programming vs Marketing: Another conservation theory in action

Is it possible to be a whiz programmer and insightful internet marketer at the same time? How many people do you notice in the industry who manage to accomplish both?

I cracked open one of my copywriting books that I used to be all into last year, and I realized I am not focusing enough on selling after diving into into advanced web development topics. After re-developing some of my affiliate sites, although they are doing okay, I could make much more money if I were to spend more time on refining my writing and reaching into the heart of the customer.

You see all these crappy-looking and poorly-executed websites that turn a nice profit, because when you need something you just zero in on the content that answers your desires. Even though these websites do not look all that great, they do a good job selling the product to the customer. Web technology is imprtant, but aesthetics is not everything. The popularity of Myspace can attest to that.

Proof: My own wife saw a one of these ridiculous banner ads on AOL.com and clicked through to it. To me, I can see right through it and clearly tell that this “top products review” is a typical affiliate marketing scheme. But my wife thought it was an honest overview and was reading through it intently, considering buying one of the white strips products. I got so mad because of the irony of things.

I need to get back into studying the psychology of the customer. Let’s put the Django and PHP stuff down for just a couple weeks to brush up and refresh on marketing skills. For instance, ad copy on my Google Adwords campaigns is more critical than the keyword lists that I painstakingly compile.

I can guarantee you revamping my copywriting will increase my profits and commissions noticeably. I’ll report back to you on here in a couple weeks.

As a programmer and online marketer I struggle with with constantly. After having done it for a couple of years, I don’t think anyone can do both and do a great job at it. The type of thinking it takes to do each well are in opposition. I think if a person could be good at both, or great at one and poor at the other, but not great at both.

I know what you mean with the teeth whitening site. That one looks like a rip off of best-teeth-whitening.com and I see that one plastered all over the ‘net on the content network. It must be working for someone..as ugly as it it.
